It took five years of lobbying, but on January 4 the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act became the law. Tens of thousands wrote letters in support of FAAMA, which mandates the creation of voluntary food allergy management guidelines to apply to schools across the United States.
FAAN (the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network) led the lobby for the groundbreaking act, and work is progressing on the guidelines. “We are thrilled with the passage of FAAMA,” said Julia Bradsher, CEO of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.
While voluntary, the guidelines will be a valuable and consistent resource for schools in all states.

In Canada, the allergy and celiac communities are pushing for a long-awaited allergy and gluten labeling law to pass. In November, Allergic Living began an online write-in campaign, with letters to the PM and the Health Minister. An incredible 4,200 individuals sent letters via the campaign.
This is getting Ottawa’s attention, but we need to keep the pressure on. Join the new Label Lobby today, writing directly to the Treasury Board president (Treasury is where the law has stalled). Don’t delay, add your voice here.

• Peanut Vaccine Finding
A research team at The Alfred and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia reports discovering a peanut protein fragment that is large enough to be detected by the body – but small enough to not provoke anaphylaxis. This is an exciting development, since the researchers say this may be a key component for use in creating a vaccine against peanut allergy.
